A speaker protector is a circuit or device designed to sit between your audio amplifier and your speakers. Its primary job is to act as a “safety fuse” that disconnects the speakers instantly if the amplifier malfunctions, preventing your expensive drivers from burning out.
Why You Need One
Most high-power amplifiers use a “Direct Coupled” (OCL) design. If an internal component (like an output transistor) fails, the amplifier might send the full DC voltage from its power supply directly into your speaker.
The Danger: Speakers are designed for AC (alternating current) audio signals. A continuous DC voltage will overheat the voice coil in seconds, melting the insulation and potentially destroying the speaker.
The Fix: A protection circuit monitors the output and “clicks” a relay to disconnect the speaker the moment it detects DC.
